Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts which is concerned with maintenance of human health and prevention of disease processes. Doctors of Chiropractic are fully licensed physicians who consider man as an integrated being and give special attention to the physiological and biochemical aspects of life including structural, spinal, musculoskeletal, neurological, vascular, nutritional, emotional and environmental relationships.
Chiropractic physicians undergo rigorous education which typically begins with a standard four year undergraduate education followed by five years of Chiropractic school. Chiropractic school is similar to a traditional medical program with the first few years focused on basic science work (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, etc.) followed by three years of clinical work. The primary difference between Chiropractic and Medical education is found in the clinical side of the education. Chiropractic physicians and medical doctors are equally trained in basic clinical diagnosis; however, medical doctors spend much more time studying surgical and pharmacological intervention, while Chiropractors spend the same amount of time studying conservative management and non-surgical/pharmacological solutions to health issues.
The practice and procedures which may be employed by Doctors of Chiropractic are based on the academic and clinical training received in and through accredited chiropractic colleges and include, but are not limited to, the use of current diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Such procedures specifically include the adjustment and manipulation of the articulations and adjacent tissues of the human body, particularly of the spinal column. Included is the treatment of intersegmental aberrations for alleviation of related functional disorders.
Chiropractic is a drug-free, non-surgical science and, as such, does not include pharmaceuticals or incisive surgery.
